Dance troupe to use old Chicago steel mill ruins as backdrop

CHICAGO (AP) - A Chicago dance-theater group will use the ruins of U.S. Steel's old South Works site as a backdrop for an upcoming performance.

The site on the southern edge of Chicago's lakefront was once the largest steel mill in the country. It closed in 1992. All that remains are old iron ore walls and empty fields and a park.

Erica Mott Productions will present a free show titled "Trials and Trails" Sept. 16 and 17 at Steelworkers Park. It will explore themes of post-industrial labor, the economy and the environment.

The Times of Northwest Indiana reports (http://bit.ly/2c1XUia ) that Mott is a choreographer and director who combines dance, videos and music for what she calls "spectacle performances."

The show is part of the Chicago Park District's Night Out in the Parks series.
