Cubs reportedly sign Hernan Perez to minor-league deal
The Cubs boosted their infield depth on Tuesday.
They also added a potential outfielder, reportedly signing Hernan Perez to a minor-league contract. According to MLB Network's Jon Heyman, the versatile Perez will be invited to spring training as a nonroster player and he'll get $1 million if he makes the Cubs' roster and have another $1 million potential in incentives.
When the Cubs non-tendered Addison Russell on Dec. 2, it opened a spot in the infield. With the Milwaukee Brewers last season, Perez played 45 games at second base, 14 at third, 21 at shortstop and 5 at first base.
He also played 7 games in right field and 3 in left.
Over an eight-year career with Milwaukee and Detroit, Perez has played every position expect catcher.
Last season, the 28-year-old Perez played in 91 games with the Brewers and hit .228/.262/.379 with 8 home runs and 18 RBI. He was designated for assignment in June, played 27 games at Class AAA San Antonio and rejoined Milwaukee in early August.
Perez has a career .252/.282/.387 slash line with 45 home runs, 180 RBI and 69 stolen bases. A right-handed hitter, his best season was 2016 with the Brewers (.272, 13 home runs, 56 RBI, 34 stolen bases).
In 34 career games at Wrigley Field, Perez is a .282 hitter with 4 homers and 11 RBI.
