Prosecutors: Fort Wayne police justified in deadly shooting

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - The Allen County Prosecutor's Office says it won't charge two Fort Wayne police officers who fatally shot a man who held a 3-year-old child hostage at knifepoint in his home.

WANE-TV reports (http://bit.ly/2gFPzmF ) the prosecutor's office said Tuesday the officers who shot 36-year-old Joseph S. Schroeder on Oct. 6 were justified in using deadly force. It said the officers "reasonably believed that force was necessary to prevent serious bodily injury or death" to the child and likely saved the child's life.

Officers Anthony Shefferly and Cameron Morris both fired shots at Schroeder and rushed the child out of the home after a six-hour standoff.

Police also had been called to the same home in July after Schroeder took a child hostage with a large knife. He surrendered after three hours.
