Gurnee hosts police academy for high school students

For the second year running, the Gurnee Police Department hosted a Citizens Police Academy event for high school students.

The class of 12 students received training from officers last week. The students learned how to collect evidence, fly a drone, conduct a traffic stop and more. Public Education Specialist Tami Martin said the students became great friends by the time they graduated the program at the end of the week.

"The scenario-based training provides firs hand experiences for the students while they develop the principles of teamwork, leadership, problem solving and communication," Martin said.

The academy is made possible through donations by area organizations. Applications for next year's event will be available on the village's website in the spring.
