Church elder, pastor charged over hidden camera at church

BETHALTO, Ill. (AP) - A church elder and pastor have been charged in a case involving hidden cameras discovered at a southwestern Illinois church on Christmas Eve.

David L. Von Bergen faces felony unauthorized recording, among other charges. He's an elder at Bethalto's Zion Lutheran Church, where cameras were found in several locations, including a changing area. The Rev. Kale Hanson is accused of helping hide evidence.

Police allege once the cameras were discovered Von Bergen tried to remove them. Authorities allege Hanson agreed to destroy camera memory cards, allowing Von Bergen to leave with the cameras.

The Madison County State's Attorney's Office charged both Thursday

A judge set Von Bergen's bail at $250,000 and Hanson's at $50,000.

Listed home numbers for the men couldn't be located Friday. It's unclear if they have attorneys.
