Clubhouse Chatter: Which pro sport would you have played?

What our Sports staff has to say while waiting for the games to resume.

Football. When I was 10-12 years old, there was nothing I loved more than rounding up my friends for almost daily, all-out tackle football games. My only season of organized ball came in eighth grade and it was a disaster. It was the main reason why I didn't play in high school — a decision that ranks as the No. 1 regret of my life. While at NIU from 1989-93, I played on intramural teams and was throwing the ball 55 yards and probably running 40 yards in 4.5 or 4.55 seconds. Now, could I have played professionally? Highly unlikely. But ever since screwing up this decision, I've followed my gut when it came to making important life decisions, not the least of which was to become a sports writer.

Obviously, this is pure fantasy, as anyone who played in the Chicago Fire's old media games can attest, so let's go all out. The chance to wear the red, white and blue in the World Cup is a great reason to choose soccer.

It would have been baseball. That's the sport I grew up playing and loved watching on television. America's pastime, playing shortstop or second base, gets a slight nod over being a shooting guard on the basketball floor.

Definitely baseball. It was the sport I played the longest back in the day, and the sport I most enjoyed. I was always a catcher, even after getting wiped out in a play at the plate and dealing with a concussion that was just a part of the deal at the time. Walk it off. I never had professional aspirations, mainly due to too many swings and misses on the breaking ball.
