Indiana highway worker shot at, injured while plowing snow

BIRDSEYE, Ind. (AP) - State Police say a southern Indiana man allegedly shot at a highway worker who was plowing snow, slightly injuring him.

Police say Thursday afternoon's gunfire shattered the snowplow's window and the driver suffered minor facial cuts from flying glass.

State Police say the Dubois (doo-BOYS') County highway worker noticed a man standing near a mailbox just before the shooting.

Officers surrounded a home in the town of Birdseye about 50 miles northeast of Evansville and tried for hours to communicate with the suspect. SWAT team members broke down the home's front door about 11 p.m. and arrested 76-year-old Virgil Lee Crews.

He faces preliminary criminal recklessness and battery charges. Crews remained jailed Friday and it wasn't clear if he has an attorney.

State Road 64 was closed during Thursday's standoff.
