District has managed money, done its homework

Community Consolidated School District 89's reputation as a high-quality school district is a draw for people who are looking to buy a home. However, District 89's enrollment is steadily growing and there are increasing costs associated with that growth. District 89's enrollment has grown 17 percent since 2012 and is projected to increase by another 10 percent in the next three years.

District 89 is facing a deficit and needs to balance its budget for the long term. They made $3 million in cuts and have been fiscally prudent, but costs continue to rise.

It's never an easy decision for a board of education to ask voters to approve a tax rate increase. I am impressed with the District 89 Board of Education and administration's careful review of options before placing a question on the Nov. 6 ballot, as well as their work to engage the community about this important issue.

District 89 graduates continue on to Glenbard South High School. I am impressed with how they are prepared for high school, and I appreciate Glenbard District 87's partnership with District 89 board members, administrators and faculty. We work closely with District 89 to align the curriculum and partner on a variety of areas related to each district's goals. A 40-cent tax rate increase would allow District 89 to maintain its high-quality educational programming.

I want District 89 students to have a full educational experience that will prepare them to enjoy the benefits of a comprehensive high school. Addressing the needs that come with a growing enrollment cannot wait. I encourage the community to support District 89 and vote in favor of the referendum.

Glenbard District 87
