Indiana man gets 4 years in prison in shooting death of teen

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) - A Terre Haute man who pleaded guilty to reckless homicide in the death of a high school student during a party has been sentenced to four years in prison.

The Tribune Star reports Nathan Derickson received the sentence Friday in Vigo Superior Court. He also will serve six years of probation.

Derickson was 19 at the time of the shooting of 17-year-old William Garett Sands in March 2018.

Officers found the Terre Haute South Vigo High School student dead at a Terre Haute home where minors were drinking alcohol. Police said Derickson was playing with a gun when it discharged.

Derickson read a statement Friday in which he apologized to Sands' family. Derickson says he's sworn off alcohol and drugs and added, "I miss Garrett every day."
