Teen's plea in fatal crash likely to spare him prison time

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - A northeastern Indiana teenager isn't expected to serve any prison time after pleading guilty in a crash that killed a 73-year-old man.

Eighteen-year-old Liam B. Burke of Fort Wayne pleaded guilty Thursday to felony reckless homicide and criminal recklessness and misdemeanor criminal recklessness.

He told a judge he was driving about 90 mph along a road with a 40 mph speed limit when his Ford Mustang plowed into Frederick Neuls' vehicle in May 2017 as Neuls turned into a driveway.

He died from blunt force trauma to the head and chest, and Burke's two passengers were injured.

The Journal Gazette reports Burke's plea agreement calls for a total sentence of 9ˆ½ years, all suspended.

That means he'll likely spend no time behind bars. Burke's due to be sentenced June 15.
