New use considered for site of large Muncie tire fire

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - Plans are in the works to revamp a Muncie property that was the scene of a large tire fire more than a decade ago.

The site of the former CR3 tire recycling business has gone unused since the 2003 fire spread across an eight-acre pile containing tons of shredded tires. It took more than a week to extinguish.

The (Muncie) Star Press reports (http://tspne.ws/2aWWHmR ) Delaware County commissioners have authorized $1,750 for an environmental study of the property.

County consultant Brad Bookout says the site could become a truck staging area for nearby businesses in an industrial park on Muncie's southwest side.

Bookout said the environmental study would look at the site's history. Drilling to determine underground contamination would be performed only if the study moves into a second phase.
