Wheaton Warrenville South celebrates state champion girls golf team
There was a lot to cheer about Wednesday during an assembly at Wheaton Warrenville South High School.
The girls golf team won the Class AA state tournament Saturday, which was plenty to celebrate on its own.
But the championship was a special one because it was the first state title ever won by a girls team at the school.
It also was a record-breaking championship, with a 307 second-round score - the lowest ever recorded at the state tournament for a girls golf team.
During the assembly, the girls showed off their championship trophy and challenged school administrators to a chipping contest.
"Our team has worked super hard this past year," said junior Sarah Hauenstein, one of the six golfers on the team. "We came out on top even though we were underdogs going in."
Other golfers on the team coached by Art Tang are Hadley Moritz, Priya Desai, Annalee Danneger, Emma Field and Olivia Rojas.
