Preschoolers' art to be auctioned for Make-A-Wish
Preschoolers at The Learning Experience in Aurora will participate in the academy's fourth annual nationwide Because Our Hearts Beat philanthropic initiative. As part of the academy's philanthropy curriculum, the center will host an auction of heart-themed art created by the students to raise awareness and money for Make-A-Wish.
The event will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, at the school, 1555 Mesa Lane, Aurora.
Tying the curriculum - designed to teach the core tenets of selflessness, generosity and giving - with Valentine's Day and American Heart Month, all proceeds from the fundraiser will be donated to Make-A-Wish, which grants wishes for children diagnosed with life-threatening medical conditions.
"Because Our Hearts Beat is one of the many philanthropic activities we look forward to each year because our students are able to use their creative talents and imaginations to help others who may be less fortunate," said Andrea Gast, director of The Learning Experience in Aurora. "The event is also an opportunity for the children to fully engage in the philanthropic lessons they've learned in our classrooms for a greater cause."
In addition to raising thousands of dollars for various charities across the country, The Learning Experience has raised more than $500,000 for Make-A-Wish, its partner in creating the philanthropy curriculum taught at the academy's 157 locations nationwide.
"We are pleased to continue to host events at our centers to benefit worthwhile charities, drive change in our communities, and teach our children invaluable lessons of empathy and giving," said Richard Weissman, chairman and CEO of The Learning Experience. "As leaders in early education, we believe it is our responsibility to instill these lessons into our future leaders - our children - during the school day, and we encourage families and members of the community to partner with us to ensure long-term success."
With the help of Grace the Greyhound and Charity Chihuahua, the mascots for philanthropy at The Learning Experience, the philanthropy curriculum helps teach children that it is not how big or small you are, it is the size of your heart that matters. Through animation, classroom activities and participatory songs, Grace and Charity introduce children to topics like the value of helping others, volunteering and donating.
