Grant rallies for downstate victory over Mundelein
Sam Fernandez pitched 5 scoreless innings in relief, and Ben Kusiak was 3-for-3 with a home run, as Grant's baseball team rallied to beat Mundelein 10-7 at Rent One Park in downstate Marion on Wednesday.
Fernandez struck out a pair in helping Grant come back from a 7-4 deficit after two. Besides Kusiak, Grant (2-1) also got 3-for-3 performances at the plate from Michael Bengston (2 doubles, triple, 3 RBI) and Ethan Unger (double, 2 RBI). Logan Lewis went 2-for-4.
Mundelein fell to 3-1.
Warren 10, Wauconda 2: At Rent One Park, Sam Lamotte struck out eight and yielded no earned runs or walks in 6⅓ innings, and the Blue Devils jumped out to an 8-0 lead after three innings.
Ryan Davila went 3-for-4 with an RBI triple for Warren, while Luke Schmitt was 2-for-3 with a double, triple and 2 RBI. Michael Rosenberg's 2-for-4 effort included an RBI single. Robert Archbold was 2-for-4 with a double.
For Wauconda, Brian McFarlin was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Grayslake North 9, St. Luke's 1: In Orlando, Fla., Pat Schaefer struck out 11 batters and did not allow an earned run in 5 innings, as the Knights cruised.
Schaefer gave up just 1 hit and 1 walk. Bobby Krebs and Danny Yates ignited the Grayslake North offense early with a 2-run single and 2-run triple, respectively.
Vince Gawerecki was 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Knights.
Valley View 9, Vernon Hills 7: In Foley, Ala., the Cougars surrendered 4 runs in the seventh inning and lost to their opponent from Jonesboro, Ark.
Brennan Reback went 3-for-4 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI for Vernon Hills, while Tommy Earhart (2 RBI) and Steven Tow were both 2-for-4 with a double. Brett Paszko tripled.
