St. Charles man charged with assault of child

A St. Charles man was charged Saturday with predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, authorities said.

Erik C. Butler, 37, of the 1100 block of Adams Avenue, was also charged with one count of aggravated use of a weapon.

Authorities said the victim - who is younger than 13 - told a family member about the assaults, and the relative contacted police.

Officials said the abuse took place over an unspecified three-month period.

Butler turned himself into St. Charles police shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday. When he was taken into custody, officers found a semiautomatic handgun and ammunition in his car.

Butler has a valid Firearm Owners Identification card, but does not have a concealed carry permit, authorities said.

The investigation was conducted jointly with the Kane County Child Advocacy Center.

Butler was being held in the Kane County jail. His bond amount and next court date is unknown.
