Letter: Sheriffs show lack of respect for law
I was alarmed to read that DuPage County Sheriff Mendrick has decided not to enforce the recently signed law controlling assault weapons in Illinois.
Most importantly, this law was passed to improve public safety, which is one of the main responsibilities of the County Sheriff's office.
Secondly, this law passed following the normal legal processes defined in our state Constitution for enactment of laws and thus requires the sheriff to enforce this law. Believing that this law violates the constitution does not allow Sheriff Mendrick to ignore enforcement.
He may challenge the law in the courts. Ignoring enforcement promotes lack of respect for the law, just the opposite of what a senior law enforcement should be doing.
The same goes for the other county sheriffs in Illinois that are also doing this.
