Learn about new sign ordinances with Elgin Chamber Friday

The city of Elgin has completed an update and revision of its sign ordinance, making it less restrictive for businesses.

The Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce will host an informational meeting for the business community covering the changes to the ordinance from from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 17. The meeting will take place at the chamber office, 31 S. Grove Ave. in downtown Elgin. It will feature William Cogley, the city's corporation counsel, and Marc Mylott, director of community development.

Changes to the sign ordinance of particular interest to businesses include:

• Increasing the area for window graphics from 15 percent to 25 percent;

• Expanding the zoning districts where electric changeable copy graphics (electronic signs) are permitted;

• Providing additional flexibility in the use of temporary graphics.

The chamber and Elgin Development Group are pleased the city of Elgin recognizes the importance of business signs, while at the same time maintaining the high standards of community appearance.
