Western Sydney moves into 1st place in A-League after draw
SYDNEY (AP) - The Western Sydney Wanderers took over first place in the A-League after drawing with Sydney FC 1-1 while the Perth Glory beat Brisbane 6-3 in a match that equaled a record for most goals scored in one match.
In the city derby before more than 40,000 fans at Sydney Football Stadium on Saturday, Dario Vidosic gave the Wanderers the lead early before a Scott Jamieson own goal leveled by halftime.
The result left the Wanderers and Brisbane level on points, but Western Sydney ahead on goal difference. Adelaide, which beat the Melbourne Victory 1-0 on Friday, was two points behind in third place.
On Sunday, fourth-place Melbourne City, led by Aaron Mooy's two goals, moved to within a point of Adelaide with a 4-1 win over last-place Central Coast to conclude the 20th round. Mariners defender Storm Roux was taken from the field on a stretcher in the second half with a leg injury after an awkward fall.
The Mariners said immediately after the game that Roux had been taken to hospital to be treated for potential leg and shoulder injuries.
At Perth, the Roar led 3-2 heading to halftime when defender Jade North scored on a header at the back post. A 31-yard goal from Glory midfielder Nebojsa Marinkovic put the home side ahead for good.
The nine goals scored equaled the A-League record that was set on four previous occasions. Brisbane lost the last time it happened - a 5-4 defeat to Sydney in the 2014-15 season.
"I'll be dancing on the tables tonight with the missus," Glory coach Kenny Lowe joked. "We went behind ... and then we fought back. It was a great advert for the league."
Brisbane coach John Aloisi said his side had difficulty defending at the set-piece.
"You don't expect to concede six goals in a game and also five of them off a set-piece," Aloisi said. "We struggled to deal with their direct play all night. They physically were a lot stronger than us, and we didn't deal with that well."
Former Denmark international Morten Nordstrand scored twice in his first starting appearance for the Newcastle Jets to beat the Wellington Phoenix 3-2.
Nordstrand scored in the second half, his first goals for Newcastle in his fourth appearance, as the Jets came back from a 2-1 deficit at halftime.
