Groupon sells restaurant software business

Groupon Inc. has agreed to sell its restaurant software business to Upserve, which provides a cloud-based software system to restaurants.

Chicago-based Groupon bought Breadcrumb, the software business, in 2012. Breadcrumb is used by restaurants, bars and nightclubs to do such things as manage tables, track labor costs and accept payments.

"Breadcrumb and Upserve go together like peanut butter and jelly," Upserve founder and CEO Angus Davis said in a news release. "Our product range offers restaurants the most comprehensive solution on the market."

Upserve, based in Providence, Rhode Island, said the combined software business will be used by more than 6,000 restaurants nationwide.
