St. Charles man charged with attempted robbery

A St. Charles man is accused of trying to rob a person riding a bicycle early Saturday morning, officials said.

Charley Soto, 18, of the 100 block of S. 13th Street, was charged with seven felony counts, according to a news release from the St. Charles Police Department, including three counts of armed violence, one count of attempted armed robbery, one count of attempted aggravated robbery and two counts of unlawful possession of controlled substance.

Police said the victim was riding his bike on S. 16th Street near Howard Street around 6:30 a.m. when a vehicle pulled up next to him and the driver demanded money and displayed a weapon. The victim rode away and called police.

Responding officers found the suspect's vehicle parked in a playground several blocks away, the release said, and later took Soto into custody.

Information about Soto's bond and next court date were not immediately available.
