No official cause of death yet for Willowbrook High School student

Flowers and white votive candles have turned what Willowbrook High School students call "the rock" into a memorial for one of their classmates.

Abdul Jalal, 15, died Monday afternoon after suffering an undisclosed medical emergency in the school's cafeteria.

DuPage High School District 88 spokeswoman Dani Brink would not comment on what he was doing in the moments before the emergency, but has said staff members quickly responded and called paramedics.

Abdul was rushed to Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 1 p.m. Monday.

An autopsy was performed Tuesday, but authorities have not determined an official cause of death and are awaiting the results of pathology and toxicology tests, DuPage County Chief Deputy Coroner Charlie Dastych said Thursday.

Students, meanwhile, have arranged the memorial around the rock near the south end of the Villa Park campus. Pictures in their tribute show Abdul running along a track and playing basketball.
