Sea Calisi gives owner 4th win in Beverly D

Thoroughbred owner Martin Schwartz hit a grand slam at Arlington International Racecourse on Saturday.

But as far as he and his wife Audrey are concerned, four wins is enough.

When heavily favored French-bred Sea Calisi came home a half-length in front of 20-1 longshot Al's Gal, the 4-year-old filly gave Schwartz a record four wins in the Grade I $700,000 Beverly D., a race named for Arlington chairman Richard Duchossois' late wife.

"I'm so happy he (Martin) won," said Audrey who has been married to Schwartz for 38 years.

"Today was his fourth win in the this special race for Mr. Duchossois' wife, and I am a four-time breast cancer survivor. I would love to see him get a fifth one but I don't want to get sick anymore."

Audrey, a native of New Jersey who now lives in Florida, is very involved with raising money for breast cancer awareness.

The Schwartz' also won the Beverly D. in 2011 (Stacelita), 2006 (Gorella) and 2005 (Angara).

Schwartz, who said his lucky number is 13, watched Sea Calisi become the first Beverly D. winner from post No. 13 in 27 runnings. And she won on Aug. 13.

"I feel a load off my back," he said. "Whenever you are odds-on, you feel there is no where to go but down. I'm just happy for this filly. She got an opportunity to strut her stuff here and she showed what a beautiful horse she is."

Trainer Chad Brown's Sea Calisi, who ran 11th for most of the race, began advancing five wide near the quarter pole and drove by the front running Zipessa inside the sixteenth pole. She paid $4.20 to win.

Zipessa is trained by Mike Stidham, who is second in the Arlington standings with 33 wins.

"She's an awesome filly," said jockey Joe Bravo. "I'd say she's got a big future ahead of her. No hidden secrets. She's a front-runner but you put 1:23 on her, a rabbit (Elusive Million) against her and she still gets beat two lengths? She's got a great future."
