Get microgreens at Palatine farmers market

The Palatine farmers market is celebrating National Farmers Market Week from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday with a special gift of microgreens.

People can visit the market's main booth and learn about all these "superfoods" from master gardeners from the University of Illinois and local farmer Dan Pilguy of Arlington Crest Farms, who will talk about the uses and benefits of microgreens, as well as their flavors.

People can plant microgreen seeds in small containers and take them home as gifts. The containers and seeds are supplied by Pilguy.

Microgreens, packed with antioxidants, sprout fast and are ready to eat in one week. They are much more nutritionally powerful than mature broccoli, radishes, peas and sunflower shoots.

The farmers market is in the parking lot of the Metra station at Smith and Wood streets in downtown Palatine.
