Out-of-touch cartoon
Friday's political cartoon is cartoonishly out of touch with Illinois' current fiscal situation.
While the artist may want readers to continue thinking the General Assembly and Gov. Pritzker are whistling past our "fiscal graveyard," including headstones reading "Unpaid Bills," "Credit Rating," and "Unfunded Pension Liabilities," the Herald's Editorial Board should know better.
Illinois has paid down our backlog of unpaid bills and is now on a regular 30-day payment cycle that's better than some Fortune 500 companies. We've seen two credit upgrades this year alone, and the General Assembly has made consistent payments to our pension liability. In fact, analyses show that we are approaching a positive trend to finally reduce that liability.
I know hating on Illinois is a common partisan tactic, but I'd expect the Editorial Board to rise above politics and reflect the facts on its page.
