Lightfoot says city will not bail out school system, grant all union demands

As Chicago Public Schools classes were canceled for the sixth consecutive day due to the teachers strike, Mayor Lori Lightfoot vowed that the city would not bail out the school system to secure a teachers contract.

Speaking to the Chicago Sun-Times editorial board after her first budget address, the mayor showed no signs of caving to end the work stoppage that has put 300,000 students out of class. Tens of thousands of striking Chicago Teachers Union and SEIU members shut down the Loop on Wednesday during Lightfoot's address to the city council.

"What we've been very clear about is: They've got to live within their means, whatever those means are, and they can't exceed that and look to the city to bail them out," Lightfoot said.
