Baseball: Schaefer pitches in to help Grayslake North past Grayslake Central
Pat Schaefer pitched 5 quality innings, Danny Yates doubled twice, and Grayslake North's baseball team beat visiting Grayslake Central 8-1 in Northern Lake County Conference action Tuesday.
Austin DeLao was 3-for-4 for the Knights, while Yates and Chris Kelly each had a pair of hits. Sebastian Sancen doubled as well for Grayslake North. Schaefer struck out seven. He allowed 1 run, 4 hits and 1 walk.
Ben Kordek was the highlight for the Rams with 2 hits, including a double, and the lone RBI. He also threw out 2 Grayslake North base runners.
Vernon Hills 2, Deerfield 1: Brad Larsen earned the win in with strong outing in the Central Suburban League game, and Joe Rangel earned the save.
Larsen went 6⅔ innings, allowing 0 runs on 3 hits while striking out four while walking one.
Vernon Hills (7-9-1, 2-2) scored its first run in the bottom of the second. Nick Marras (1-for-2) reached on an error. Larsen then drew a walk to move courtesy runner Brian Duffley to second. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch, and Duffley eventually scored on another wild pitch.
The Cougars added the eventual winning run in the fourth. Drew Winegardner reached on a two-base error, Marras sacrificed him to third, and Larsen drove in Winegarder on a fielder's choice.
Warren 3, Lake Zurich 2: Riley Kocen pitched 6⅓ innings to earn the win, striking out seven, walking out and allowing 6 hits and 2 runs in the North Suburban game.
Vic Perez and Sam DeLuca had the only hits for Warren (9-5, 4-3) against Matt Svanson, who struck out seven and walked five in a complete-game effort (6 innings).
Jason Ims and Michael Chialdikas were both 2-for-3 with a double for Lake Zurich. Tyler Snep was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Mundelein 17, Waukegan 1: The Mustangs beat the Bulldogs for the second day in a row, as Brendan Murphy earned the win in the North Suburban contest.
Nick Camugnaro was 3-for-3 with 2 doubles for Mundelein (16-0, 8-0), and Connor Ashton went 2-for-2 with 2 doubles.
Grant 12, Lakes 4: Ray Guardado smashed a 3-run homer and added a sacrifice fly, as the host Bulldogs won in Northern Lake County action.
Shawn Riley struck out nine and allowed 4 earned runs over 6 innings for Grant (10-6, 6-1). Nolan Unger was 3-for-3 with an RBI for the Bulldogs. Jimmy Friel (3 RBI) and Logan Lewis (2 RBI) were both 2-for-3.
Brandon Khan homered for Lakes, while Michael Behrendt had a double. Quinn McQuade was 2-for-4 for the Eagles.
Stevenson 10, Zion-Benton 1: Henry Marchese, Jack Housinger and Scotty Max each had 2 hits for the Patriots in the North Suburban game.
Stevenson got doubles from Housinger, Max, Evan Kiah and Isaac Lucas. Marchese and Housinger tripled, as well.
Libertyville 5, Lake Forest 4: The Wildcats beat the Scouts in North Suburban action for the second day in a row, as Ryan Cote struck out nine and allowed 2 runs in 5 innings of work.
Jackson Petersen was 2-for-3 with an RBI to pace Libertyville offensively. Billy Krumm pitched the seventh for the save.
Stevenson 8, Zion-Benton 4: On Monday, Henry Marchese hit a 3-run homer and finished 3-4, as the Patriots won the North Suburban game.
Charlie Ling was 2-for-3, Benjamin Chestler doubled and Shane McGaha had a 2-run single for Stevenson.
Libertyville 4, Lake Forest 2: On Monday, Riley Gowens allowed 2 runs over 6 innings, striking out eight and walking two, as the Wildcats won in North Suburban action.
Collin Fields pitched a no-hit seventh for the save. Tim Jean (double), Brant Kym, Dan Marks and Nick Angel had all RBI for Libertyville.
