LSU player alleges police harassment, 3 officers on leave
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - An LSU football player's social media post about being harassed by Baton Rouge police has led to three officers being placed on administrative leave, the city's police chief said.
Freshman Tigers receiver Koy Moore said he was 'œviolated'ť by officers who stopped him at gunpoint last weekend and unzipped his pants while searching for 'œa weapon that I repeatedly told them I did not have.'ť
Moore said officers also questioned him about whether he was in possession of illegal drugs, and snatched his phone away when he tried to take video of what was happening during the stop.
'œIf I didn't tell those incompetent officers I was a LSU football player there's no telling if I would've been here to tell the story,'ť Moore added.
LSU coach Ed Orgeron said met with Moore on Monday morning to learn about the incident and also spoke with Baton Rouge Police Chief Murphy Paul, adding that he wanted to thank Paul 'œfor acting quickly and investigating this.'ť
'œThere's no place in America for racism or social injustice,'ť Orgeron said.
LSU athletic director Scott Woodward said the details described by Moore were 'œvery troubling,'ť and added that he has 'œfull faith'ť that Baton Rouge police will conduct a 'œthorough and transparent investigation'ť of the matter.
'œBlack Americans should never be treated unjustly by law enforcement,'ť Woodward added. 'œWe will do our part to help change systematic racism in America.'ť
Paul said his department appreciated Moore bringing officers' alleged conduct to his attention and pledged 'œa thorough investigation into this complaint.'ť
Baton Rouge Mayor Sharon Weston Broome said she also has been in contact with Paul about the investigation.
'œWe take these allegations seriously and will await the findings,'ť she said. 'œWe will get to the bottom of this situation and keep the lines of communication open with the community.'ť
