Flooded waterways no place for boaters, officials say

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Illinois officials are warning boaters to stay off flooded waterways as a safety precaution.

The Illinois Emergency Management Agency and Illinois Department of Natural Resources issued the warning Thursday. Boating on rivers at or above flood stage is dangerous for boaters and emergency responders.

IDNR Law Enforcement Director Jerry Costello says he understands it's tempting because water-recreation season is here. But he says conservation police officers regularly see rapid currents, floating debris and other dangers during even moderate flooding. Such hazards can lead to injury or even death.

Restrictions are currently in place on portions of the Illinois River, the Kaskaskia River and the Fox River.

IEMA Director Alicia Tate-Nadeau (tayt-na-DOH') says people should also stay off levees. Most are saturated and unstable.
