Reactions to Obama transgender directive: 'Radical policies in their bathrooms'

Statements released Friday regarding the new federal directive on transgender students in public schools.

From District 211 Superintendent Dan Cates:

"District 211 affirms and supports the identity of all our students. With accommodations that consider all students, our schools provide thoughtful solutions that honor the dignity of each individual student and readily provide privacy for those who desire it. Our students demonstrate support and respect for one another and our accommodations create an accepting and positive environment where all students can thrive."

From Jocelyn Floyd, special counsel, Thomas More Society:

"Forcing girls to share restrooms and locker rooms with biological males across the nation is an egregious invasion of privacy. Not only are the Obama administration's guidelines a direct violation of their privacy rights, they also infringe on their parents' rights. My clients don't want Obama's radical policies in their bathrooms - and there is no federal authority or legal justification for these guidelines."

From John Knight, LGBT Project director, ACLU of Illinois:

"Today is a good day for all students across Illinois and across the nation and especially students who are transgender. The U.S. Education and Justice Departments today made it crystal clear that schools must fully integrate transgender students into all aspects of school life and treat them fairly. This guidance will assist school officials throughout our state by making it clear that transgender students are fully protected from discrimination or segregation.

"The guidance also makes clear that the 'discomfort' of other students is not a reason to deny students who are transgender access to bathrooms and locker rooms."
