Freedom Caucus willing to let us all crash
I understand the need to keep debate civil and to treat each other, including the people we elect, with the respect that we owe every person by default. It's the only way to heal what we can all see is a very divided country. But there comes a point when we need to call it like it is, and address a few very problematic elephants in the room: what has the Freedom Caucus actually done for America?
Potential government shutdowns, paralysis in the House itself, very little real legislation actually passed, the caucus's record is more in line with a brain tumor than with a legislating caucus.
Hours before I wrote this, Freedom Caucus members shot down the second Study Committee nominee for speaker, compromise-candidate Tom Emmer, selected by fair ballot within the party.
If the House Study Committee could be said to represent home renovators whose tastes I disagree with, the Freedom Caucus represents arsonists whose agenda seems to be grabbing our government's steering wheel from the passenger seat and not letting go until we either hand over total control or we all crash together.
