Defends Elk Grove's Memorial Day event

Mr. J.R. Skowron, in his Neighbor Fencepost letter published on July 4, expressed his dissatisfaction with a wreath he observed on display at the memorial fountain for Memorial Day.

I am not sure of what he observed and when, but I am very certain he did not attend the annual observance which took place on Memorial Day at the Elk Grove Pavilion across the street.

This observance had been held outside the village hall until it was moved to the pavilion in 2015.

More than 150 assembled for the presentation of the colors and the national anthem, led by the choir of the Elk Grove Village Baptist Church. Mayor Craig Johnson, plus a decorated veteran of World War II and others addressed the assembly after which six wreaths were presented by members of the village board, the police and fire departments, the Elk Grove VFW Post, the American Legion, the Lions Club and the Lions Auxiliary.

Following a brief closing ceremony, all were invited to stay and partake of assorted snacks and beverages which were served by a local Boy Scouts of America troop. I enjoyed visiting with friends, neighbors and other veterans.

I sincerely invite Mr. Skowron to join us next year.
