Wreath making workshops offer inspiration for festival

The making of wreaths is an ancient and honored art that began about 1000 B.C. Today, wreaths are used to celebrate holidays, as décor for homes and to add a bit of whimsy to a room.

The Arlington Heights Historical Society celebrates this ancient tradition with its second annual Festival of the Wreaths this fall. All individuals and groups are invited to participate.

If you are looking for some inspiration and technical pointers, there are several workshops available within the community. Descriptions of the workshops are listed below:

• Wreath Workshop at Lucky Junk: 6-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13. Create a unique vintage assemblage wreath at Lucky Junk, 405 S. Arlington Heights Road. Cost is $90. All materials, drinks and nibbles are included. To register or for information, visit luckyjunkshop.com or call (847) 440-6633.

• Holly Jolly Holiday Wreath Workshop: 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29. Get into the holiday spirit by creating a one-of-kind wreath. Held at the Arlington Heights Historical Museum, 110 W. Fremont. Register online at ahpd.org or at any park district registration office.

• Family Wreath Workshop: 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2. Spend some quality time with the family and create a special wreath together. Held at the Arlington Heights Memorial Library, 500 N. Dunton St. Register online at ahml.info.

All wreaths must be registered by Oct. 21. Finished wreaths may be delivered from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, or 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4.

Festival of the Wreaths is open to the public for viewing and bidding Nov. 22 through Dec. 4 at the Arlington Heights Historical Museum.

All proceeds from Festival of the Wreaths benefit the Historical Society's mission of collecting, preserving and presenting the history of Arlington Heights. The society is a volunteer, member-funded organization that is a partner of the Arlington Heights Historical Museum.

For information about the Festival of the Wreaths, go to ahmuseum.org, call (847) 255-1225 or drop by the museum at 110 W. Fremont to pick up a brochure.
