Faith communities celebrate World Peace Day
Nineteen faith communities will come together on Sunday, Jan. 7, for the 13th annual World Peace Day Interfaith Prayer Service in Naperville.
The goal of the annual event is to provide mutual respect and to protect and defend the dignity of all people and serve humanity in the cause of peace.
The service will begin at 2 p.m. in North Central College's Wentz Concert Hall, 171 E. Chicago Ave. Three activists are scheduled to speak:
• Cristobal Cavazos, a co-founder of Immigrant Solidarity of DuPage, a group advocating for immigration reform, protecting immigrant rights and defending immigrant workers from wage theft.
• Sadia Covert, a member of the Islamic Center of Naperville and author of the Illinois Hate Crime Bill. She is also the founder of UCARE, Uniting through Cultural Awareness and Regional Education.
• Kathy McBane, a co-founder of Moms Building Bridges, a Naperville group that works on supporting an inclusive community that celebrates diversity.
Participating faith communities are Congregation Beth Shalom, Naperville; St. Margaret Mary Catholic Parish, Naperville; Pax Christi Illinois; Islamic Center of Naperville; St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Parish, Naperville; Knox Presbyterian Church, Naperville; Benedictine Sisters of the Sacred Heart, Lisle; Women of Faith for Justice; Pax Joyce Ministries; First Church of Christ, Scientist Naperville; Buddha's Light International Association, Chicago; DuPage Unitarian Universalist Church; ICERV (Ismaili Community Engaged in Responsible Volunteering); Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Wheaton; Baha'i Community of Naperville; DuPage AME Church; Unity Partnership; Congregation Etz Chaim, Lombard; Sri Venkateswara Swami (Balaji) temple of Greater Chicago, Aurora; Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom; Moms Building Bridges, Naperville; Sikh Religious Society, Palatine.
