Planned farm with up to 2 million hens facing opposition

BOONVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Some residents are fighting a proposed egg farm that could have up to 2 million hens in rural southwestern Indiana.

The plans from Prime Foods Holding Inc. call for spending potentially $50 million on the confined-feeding operation a few miles from the Warrick County city of Boonville.

Nearby resident Josh Cobb tells the Evansville Courier & Press (http://bit.ly/2cRtQEQ ) he's worried about contamination to the lake that supplies water to his home. He says 19 creeks and lakes are within 1,500 feet of the site.

Prime Foods General Manager Ron Bennett says the facility won't have any manure discharge and that the site is in a remote location. Bennett says the facility would likely start with about 500,000 hens to provide eggs for its current processing plant elsewhere in Warrick County.
