Launching Lent: Aurora Methodists to partner in Ash Wednesday worship

Two Aurora United Methodist churches are partnering in a joint Ash Wednesday service to open the Lenten season.

Wesley UMC and Flowing Forth UMC will jointly hold the service at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, at Aurora Christian School, 2255 Sullivan Road in Aurora.

Last year, the Rev. Derek Rogers, Flowing Forth UMC pastor, responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by imposing public drive-up ashes in the school parking lot, temporary site of Flowing Forth worship services.

According to the Rev. Dr. Derek Weber, UMC director of preaching ministries, Ash Wednesday is a call to the Lenten season observance from March 2 to April 17, Easter Sunday.

He said, "The season of Lent is essential for those who truly seek to be disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Because a part of what we learn in this time of self-examination is that we are what might be most in need of transformation."
