Letter: Cadets appreciation shows spirit of holidays

The Great Lakes Naval Cadets Holiday Visit to Arlington Heights is always moving. These young men and women have enlisted in a military service whose ultimate mission is to protect the citizens of the United States. For one day out of their entire eight weeks of training, these cadets are allowed off the base. This one day allows them to call their families (Verizon donates the phones), have two great meals (prepared by chefs from local Arlington Heights restaurants), relax with others and in general just have fun.

The Stark Family has been hosting this for the past 12 years. They host this event to honor their son who lost his life in Afghanistan. Many thanks to the Stark family for doing this.

This year, a local elementary school (Riley Elementary CCSD21) had students create holiday cards that were passed out to every cadet. The messages were varied but all heartfelt. Each card was unique, just like the cadets. Thank you Principal Bellini for doing this.

I know this statement gets said a lot, but I'll say it again; "It really takes a village." It's these kinds of events that bring home one of many meanings of the holiday season. It really is a grand gesture to let the cadets know how appreciative we are for their service. Thank you Cadets.
