Letter: Acceptance, compassion, yes, but not advantage
I'm responding to the recent column headlined "The harm of transgender sports bans."
The piece ended by saying it was cruel to ban a 10-year-old transgender girl from playing soccer on a girls' team in Indiana.
I disagree.
I think it was cruel of the child's parents to allow a 10-year-old to make that kind of decision in the first place.
The transgender decision is extremely complicated, even for an adult. A prepubescent 10-year-old cannot possibly make that or almost any other kind of life-changing decisions.
I don't know the answer to the whole transgenders-in-sports discussion, but I do know I wouldn't want my child to compete in any sport that gives any kind of an unfair advantage to other players.
Acceptance and compassion for transgenders … absolutely.
