Seniors invited to sign up for Bocce Ball Tournament

The Waukegan Park District and Waukegan Township are partnering to host a Bocce Ball Tournament from 2-5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, at Corrine J. Rose Park, 412 S. Lewis Ave., Waukegan.

The Bocce Ball Tournament is open to individuals 55 years and older.

Participants will have the chance to win prizes for first, second, and third place in the tournament. All participants will be guaranteed two games.

According to the United States Bocce Federation, bocce, also known as Italian lawn bowling, is one of the most widely played games in the world and has been gaining popularity in the United States. Best known in Italy, many Sicilians gather in a town square for a daily afternoon game.

Due to the sport's popularity among local adults, the renovation of Corrine J. Rose Park included new courts located near Waukegan Township's Park Place Senior Center.

"The Waukegan Park District is proud to partner with Waukegan Township to host a Bocce Ball Tournament," said Jacqueline Herrera Giron, president of the Waukegan Park District Board of Commissioners.

"Intergovernmental relationships like these are vital to build community. The tournament will give older adults an opportunity to enjoy the new bocce courts at Corrine J. Rose Park in a structured tournament."

"The Waukegan Park District fosters partnerships with other government entities to enhance the recreation and leisure opportunities available for our community," said Jay Lerner, executive director of the Waukegan Park District.

Registration is now open and space is limited. The fee to participate is $20 per team or $12 per player.
