The Latest: Decatur man with BB gun, knife shot by police

DECATUR, Ill. (AP) - The Latest on a police involved shooting in Decatur (all times local):

2:15 p.m.

Decatur police say a black man shot by a white officer was armed with a BB gun that resembled a real firearm.

WAND-TV reports (http://bit.ly/29IInjq ) that the 40-year-old Decatur man is listed in serious condition after being shot in the chest early Monday. The Associated Press is not yet identifying the man because he has not been charged with a crime.

Officers responded to a report of a man with a gun around 1 a.m. Interim Police Chief James Getz said during a news conference that Officer Andrew Wittmer fired one round during the encounter that "ended the threat."

Police initially said the man had a handgun and a large knife strapped to his wrist. Getz later said the man was carrying a BB gun that resembled a real firearm.

Local NAACP President Jeannelle Norman is urging residents to stay calm, wait for the investigation to play out and serve as an example for other communities.

The case has been turned over to the Illinois State Police.

A Decatur man police claim was armed with a gun and knife is being hospitalized for injuries after he was shot by a police officer.

Decatur police said Monday that officers were notified around 1 a.m. of a man with a gun. Police say the officers encountered a man matching the description and an officer fired, striking the man in the chest.

The man who was shot was taken to a hospital. He's listed in serious condition.

WAND-TV reports (http://bit.ly/29IInjq ) the man is a 40-year-old black Decatur resident and the officers are white. The officer who fired is a five-year department veteran.

The investigation has been turned over to Illinois State Police.

The shooting comes amid recent high profile police-involved shootings of black men in Louisiana and Minnesota.
