Batavia mayor elected to 10th term
Batavians will continue to call Jeff Schielke mayor for another four years.
Schielke won a 10th term Tuesday, according to unofficial returns.
"I'm humbled by the honor," he said. "I really consider that a deep personal honor.
"People must think we've done a pretty good job if I get this much open support."
Schielke had 2,354 votes and Jason Stoops had 1,295.
It was the first time since 2009 anyone ran against Schielke and only the fifth time he has had opposition.
Schielke, 68, is a lifelong Batavia resident. His tenure has led him to leadership roles regionally, with the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus and the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning. He has also been a director for the Pace suburban bus agency since 2002.
Schielke said previously he consulted with "hundreds" of residents before deciding to run again.
During the campaign Stoops praised Schielke's devotion to the community, but he said 40 years was too long for anyone to hold office.
During Schielke's reign, the town has more than doubled in population to its present 26,934. He presided over an era that saw the development of the Riverwalk and the remodeling of an old windmill factory into the Batavia Government Center.
