Algonquin man charged after Palatine man dies in Elgin street race

An Algonquin man faces a trio of felony charges for his role in the death of a Palatine motorcyclist after the two engaged in a high-speed street race last month in Elgin, according to authorities.

Matthew Kasper, 26, of the 200 block of Hillcrest Drive, Algonquin, was charged Tuesday in Kane County with three felonies - motorcycle vehicle accident involving death, reckless homicide and aggravated street racing - as well as a speeding misdemeanor.

Kasper was arrested after investigators determined the victim, Piotr Klimczak, 49, had been street racing against a second motorcyclist June 11 on Route 31, reports said. After crossing the road's center line, Klimczak fatally struck a 2005 Honda SUV near Wing Street in Elgin. Kasper fled the scene prior to emergency responders' arrival, according to reports.
