Baseball: Luke pitches Hersey past Barrington
Hersey's baseball team snapped a three-game skid by coming up with a victory against the Mid-Suburban West champions on Friday.
Behind a standout effort from starter Hunter Luke, Hersey handled visiting Barrington 3-1.
Luke allowed 3 hits, struck out two and walked one in getting a complete-game victory.
James Denten drove in pair of runs for Hersey (11-17-1, 6-9) with a first-inning double, and the Huskies got their final run in the fifth inning on a wild pitch.
Jackson Medina (6 IP, 6H, 2 strikeouts) handled all the pitching for Barrington (19-5-2, 13-2), which got its run in the first inning on an RBI single from Clark Elliott. The other hits for the Broncos were a double by Jake Horcher and a triple by Tyler Acosta.
Schaumburg 2, Elk Grove 0: Senior Zach Studzinski fired a complete-game 1-hitter to lift the visiting Saxons in MSL action.
Studzinski walked no one and struck out six. He ended up facing just one over the minimum after Zach Schwartz, who had Elk Grove's only hit, was caught stealing.
Elk Grove's only other baserunner was Sebastian Garza, who reached on an error in the second inning. He stole second base and was the only Elk Grove runner to make it that far.
Schaumburg got both its runs in the second inning. Peter Kandefer's single drove in Jack Lancaster, and Kandefer later scored on a fielder's choice.
Josh Periaswamy allowed 5 hits over 7 innings for Elk Grove (8-15-1, 5-10).
Tyler Slome, Ben Kim and Ruan Sakamoto had singles for Schaumburg (6-17, 4-11).
Buffalo Grove 11, Palatine 1 (5): The host Bison put together a nice mix of potent hitting and stingy pitching to improve to 23-4 overall and 14-1 in the MSL.
Zach Fricke allowed 5 singles and struck out five with no walks to get the victory.
Riley Rundquist had a solo homer in the fourth inning, and Matt Brunelli, Carter Gledhill and Rio Komatani all doubled. Mac Camardo and Sean Jacobs drove in 2 runs apiece, and Komatani had 3 RBI.
Josh Stitt drove in the run for Palatine (18-12, 9-5).
Wheeling 10, Hoffman Estates 9 (9 inn.): Andy Shover's walk-off fielder's choice scored Jeremy Kim to give Wheeling (13-15, 5-9) the MSL crossover win over the visiting Hawks (7-16, 3-12).
The Wildcats trailed 9-8 in the bottom of the ninth when Kyle Bullock ripped a game-tying double to score Michael Best from second base and send Jeremy Kim to third.
Hoffman Estates intentionally walked Drew Roberts to load the bases before Shover's game-winning at-bat.
Bullock, who took the mound in the fifth inning, was the winning pitcher.
Top hitters for the Wildcats were Bullock (3-for-4, 3 runs, double), Roberts (2 RBI, single), Shover (2-for-5, 3 RBI, double), Cade Kaplan (2-for-3) and Best (2-for-4, RBI).
