Elgin Theatre Company to hold auditions July 9-10

The Elgin Theatre Company is pleased to announce auditions for its production of the wildly funny "Screwing Around With Shakespeare" by award-winning local playwright Donna Latham. The comedy will be directed by Julie Price.

This production will be part of the 2017 Elgin Fringe Festival.

The auditions will be 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Sunday and Monday, July 9-10, at First United Methodist Church, 216 E. Highland Ave. in Elgin. There will be no callbacks.

Prepare a 1-minute comedic Shakespearean monologue.

In addition, there will be cold readings from the script.

The theme will be "Steampunk, Baby!"

Synopses and character descriptions:

"Screwing Around With Shakespeare" contains three short comedy pieces.

In the first piece, Ralphie can't get the hang of wooing his ladylove beneath her balcony. Good thing Romeo and Cyrano show up.

Characters: 3M, 1F

• Ralphie - a lovesick but inept wooer; male 20s

• Romeo - a romantic gadabout from Verona; male 20s

• Cyrano - a large-schnozzed romantic poet; male 30s

• Jocelyn - a shrew fed up with weird wooers; female 20s.

The second piece is a poem performed by an actor, either male or female, costumed as Nick Bottom from "A Midsummer Night's Dream."

For the third piece, the characters are two females and two males.

• Hamlet - melancholy Dane riddled with existential angst; male 20s

• Gertrude - Hamlet's sexy mother, who recently married his uncle and is growing disillusioned with the whole creepy arrangement; female 40s;

• Claudius - dirty old man with a dad-bod; male 50s-60s;

• Ophelia - Hamlet's ex, who is sick of men running the show; female 20s.

"Screwing Around With Shakespeare" will be performed as part of the 2017 Elgin Fringe Festival. The Elgin Fringe Festival is four days of dance, comedy, drama, and music all performed live for you! It's just so fringey!

The 2017 Elgin Fringe Festival will be held Sept. 13-17 in downtown Elgin. The performances will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14; 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15; 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16; and 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, at Elgin Art Showcase, 164 Division St., eighth floor, Elgin.
