Glen Ellyn Historical Society asks for support for historical plaques on downtown sidewalks
The Glen Ellyn Historical Society is proposing to add historical plaques to the downtown Glen Ellyn sidewalks as part of the streetscape plan.
The two historical plaque samples are installed at the corner of Crescent and Main, near M & Em's Children's Boutique. The plaques would contain information such as the date of the first store in Danby (an earlier name for Glen Ellyn). It would also have an identifying number. There would be a website to go to learn more about the different buildings that have been at each location through the years.
Geneva has incorporated these historic markers into their community with much success for years. It is both educational and fun to learn about what has come before.
Depending on the sidewalk materials chosen, the orientation of the plaques will be either diamond or square - so there are two samples of different materials and shapes.
Please support the historical plaques in the Glen Ellyn streetscaping survey, and help promote it with other Glen Ellyn residents. As there is no question specifically addressing this issue on the survey, they ask that you add remarks in the comments section at the bottom.
The streetscaping survey is at downtownge.com. Click on the yellow button to vote for your preferred material.
Make your choices of preferred materials, then scroll to the bottom of the survey where it asks if there is anything else you would like to share. Make your comments in support of the historical sidewalk plaques.
There will be a fundraising campaign later, if the village board approves this concept, to cover the cost of the plaques.
Help the Glen Ellyn Historical Society integrate the village's past into the future of Glen Ellyn and to appreciate those who have come before us. It will preserve the present, as well, in creating a living and enduring record of Glen Ellyn businesses through the years.

Since Aunt Tillie can't meet with the kids in person this month, she has recorded a fun story time for them that includes a reading of the poem, "A Visit from St. Nicholas." Go to the Glen Ellyn Historical Society's YouTube channel.
