Purdue scientist lone finalist for U of Vermont presidency

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A scholar from Purdue University in Indiana could become the next president of the University of Vermont.

A memo sent to the UVM community on Monday, said that Suresh Garimella, a Purdue vice president, is the sole finalist for the job that will become vacant when current UVM President Thomas Sullivan leaves the post later this year to finish a book.

At Purdue, Garimella serves as the Goodson Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering. He was appointed by President Donald Trump to serve on the National Science Board, which advises the president and Congress on science policy issues.

UVM Trustee Chair David Daigle says Garimella will be visiting the Burlington campus Feb. 13-15 for a series of meetings.

Following the visit, the trustees will decide whether to appoint Garimella.
