Baseball: Grayslake Central, Sturm shut out Grayslake North

Eric Sturm fired a 1-hitter over 4 innings, striking out seven, as Grayslake Central defeated host Grayslake North 9-0 in Northern Lake County Conference baseball action Friday.

Kevin O'Brien fanned 2 hitters in 2 innings of work, and Sean Gniadek added a strikeout in the seventh inning to preserve the victory for the Rams (6-2, 2-1), who won two of three games between the two teams this week.

Grayslake Central broke open a scoreless tie in the third, scoring four times, and then put the game out of reach by plating three more runs in the fourth.

Antonio Crews led the Rams' 9-hit attack with a double, single and 3 RBI. Coby Moe (2 RBI) and Marcus Maristela (2 runs) each had a pair of hits. O'Brien added a double.

Grayslake North got a double from freshman Grant Garrett.

Warren 11, Highland Park 0: Nate Rentas homered for the third time this week, and Brandon Houtz was 3-for-3 with a double and 3 RBI for the Blue Devils in the nonconference game.

Gabe Schmitt was 2-for-3 with 2 doubles for Warren (10-2), and Brad Vondruska earned the win.

Stevenson 2, Notre Dame 1: Eli Fishbein (4 innings, 3 hits, 1 run) and Chris Farina (3 innings) combined on a 3-hitter for the Patriots in the nonconference game.

Stevenson got 2-for-3 performances from Ryan McElhinny (double), Zach Taylor (2 RBI) and Jake Surane.

Carmel 4, Palatine 4: Nolan Taylor pitched 4 shutout innings, striking out five, and Ben Wiegman homered for the Corsairs, whose nonconference game was called due to darkness.

Dylan Paquette and Wiegman (3 RBI) were both 2-for-3 for Carmel (4-1-1).

Deerfield 8, Lakes 4: Carson Cobb was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Andrew Huissen doubled for the Eagles in the nonconference game.
