Misguided complaints

I had to chuckle when I read William Brinkman's Aug. 15 letter. He's ripping on Jeanne Ives for having a campaign rally. What was wrong with that?

He complains that Jeanne's supporters at the outdoor fundraiser were not all wearing masks and not all keeping 6 or 10 feet apart. Mr. Brinkman called it her "defense" when he apparently heard a comment that "at least they weren't looting and tearing down statues." This, of course, exposes the hypocritical view that mask-wearing and social distancing are not "required" for those looting and tearing down statues. But, let it be known that the bulk of Jeanne's campaign funding is from us, the people of the 6th District (and we do get excited at her rallies) whereas others get money from big donors outside of our district.

On the topic of looting and tearing down statues, these actions are very hurtful to many people both within and outside the 6th District. Why make light of this theft and destruction by implying that these criminal actions are nothing compared with being at an outside rally without a mask?
