Barrington hopes to harness hometown horsepower

Buckle up, Fillies fans.

You know your Barrington High School girls basketball and softball teams have been driven to win over the years.

Now the Fillies are hoping to see that same drive from their fans.

The girls basketball and softball programs would like the help of the community.

Through March 15, Marquardt of Barrington Buick-GMC (1421 S. Barrington Road in Barrington) will donate $50 to these programs for anyone test driving a new Buick or GMC.

As an added benefit, a free car wash will be offered to anyone who participates.

Participants must be 18 years of age, own a valid driver's license, and proof of insurance is required for the test drive. There is a limit of one donation per household.

The programs can earn up to a total of $12,500.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for these programs," said hall of fame softball coach Perry Peterson, whose Fillies were fourth in the Class 4A state finals last year. "We hope that our families, alumni and community can help our girls reach their goal."

Girls basketball coach Babbi Barreiro appreciates the community support.

"Our student-athletes get so much support from the Barrington community, it is nice to get a chance to thank them by showing our support through programs like this," said Barreiro, the dean of MSL girls basketball coaches with 23 seasons in charge of the program. "We thank Marquardt Buick-GMC for allowing us this opportunity and we recognize how crucial community support is in high school athletics."

Support for Chris

Former Palatine-student athlete Chris Macahon was diagnosed with Stage 3 Colon Cancer on Jan. 8.

His 'gofundme' Facebook post explains that he has displayed a strong, beautiful spirit and positive attitude during the surreal journey.

Chris was attending Mesa Community Junior College, in Mesa Arizona, to play baseball.

His goal is to play Division I baseball.

During high school, he was a two-sport standout for the Pirates, serving a captain in both baseball and basketball.

He was Palatine's male athlete of the year as a senior.

Look for more on Macahon's story later this week in the Daily Herald.

Hogen history

Since 2004, George and Joanne Hogen have been able to watch a son or daughter in college athletics.

The Hogens (George, Brittany, Brett, and Maggie) have played college basketball (Lawrence, Wisconsin-Parkside and Cornell College) or football (Carthage) after graduating from Hersey.

Maggie will be the final one to graduate college this spring.

A senior at Cornell College, she was been selected to the 16 All-Midwest Conference women's basketball second team.

Hogen started all 25 games for the Rams, ranking second in the MWC in offensive rebounds (3.2 rpg), third in blocked shots (1.3 bpg) and fifth in rebounds (8.0 rpg). The 5-10 post averaged 10.7 points per game and shot 43.7 percent from the field.

She delivered three of her six double-doubles against MWC tournament teams, including a 13-point, 10-rebound effort in her final home game against league champion St. Norbert. She netted a career-high 23 points against Knox and had a career-best 15 rebounds at Carroll.

Hogen finished her career as the program's all-time leader in blocked shots (114). She stands eighth in rebounds (623). Hogen played in 97 career games (four shy of the school record) and was part of the three winningest teams in Ram history.

Cornell (19-6) made its third MWC title game appearance in the last four years, falling 56-53 to St. Norbert in this year's championship. The Rams placed second in the MWC regular season with a 15-3 mark. The team reeled off 13 consecutive wins after a 5-4 start to the season.
