Report: Smyly nears deal to come back to Cubs

Drew Smyly will be back with the Cubs next season, according to a report from ESPN.

Jesse Rogers reported Sunday that the left-handed starting pitcher is nearing a contract agreement with the team. Rogers did not report the length of the contract, nor Smyly's compensation.

Smyly started 22 games for the North Siders last year, posting a 3.47 ERA and striking out 91 batters with a 7-8 record. His most notable 2022 win was arguably the 4-2 decision over the Cincinnati Reds in the second annual, nationally televised "Field of Dreams" game in Iowa. Smyly struck out nine and gave up no hits in 5 innings of work.

Before coming to Chicago, Smyly pitched for Detroit, Tampa, San Francisco, Texas, Philadelphia and Atlanta. He is 53-47 with a 4.10 ERA for his career.
