Olympians with local ties

Figure skating Jason Brown, Highland Park; Alexa Knierim, Addison

The team event started Friday, and Knierim turned in a personal best with pairs partner Brandon Fraizer. Brown will compete individually when the men's competition begins Tuesday. Knierim will be back on the ice Feb. 18 for the start of the pairs competition.

Hockey

Men's team: Drew Commesso, Blackhawks draft pick

Team USA will start preliminary action on Feb. 10 against China.

Women's team: Megan Bozek, Buffalo Grove; Jesse Compher, Northbrook; Kendall Coyne Schofield, Palos Heights; Savannah Harmon, Downers Grove; Abbey Murphy, Evergreen Park

Team USA defeated Finland on Thursday and will play the Russian Olympic Committee team today.

Ski jumping Kevin Bickner, Wauconda; Patrick Gasienica, Cary; Casey Larson, Barrington

Men's qualifying rounds will start today.

SpeedskatingEthan Cepuran, Glen Ellyn; Austin Kleba, Campton Hills; Emery Lehman, Oak Park

Cepuran and Lehman are first up with the men's 5,000 meters on Sunday. Kleba's first race is the men's 500 meters on Feb. 12.
